About s/v Wild
s/v Wild is a J/42 fractional sloop built in 2000. It has two cabins, two heads, a salon and galley and a nav station. Auxiliary power is provided by a 47 HP Yanmar 3JH2TE turbo diesel engine. Some modifications that I’ve made include electronics upgrades, addition of solar power, and a diesel heater.
Auxiliary Craft
Frisky is the tender to s/v Wild. It’s a Zodiac Cadet DL300 RIB with a 9.9 HP Johnson (Suzuki) outboard. It’s my aquatic pickup truck. It hauls everything from passengers to fuel, water, and groceries. It ferries Feral to the shore. And it takes me on SCUBA and longer away missions. Some people call Frisky a “dinghy.” A small boy in Mexico called it a pangacito.

Feral is my cruising land transportation. It’s a Bike Friday New World Tourist bicycle with a case that becomes a trailer. Feral handles everything from exploring urban centers to remote dirt roads while hauling fuel and groceries. It folds up for easy handling and packs away into a suitcase for storage or air travel.
Savage is an Isle inflatable SUP. Actually, the SUPS change from time to time as they tend to develop leaks or just explode in the tropical sun. Why don’t they put overpressure relief valves on these things anyway? Still, most of the time the most convenient way to go ashore is with Savage and a backpack. It’s also great for exploring anchorages, snorkling, and holding parts and tools when I’m working under the boat.

Who Is This Guy Anyway?
A Bit About Me
I spent my early years on a small farm in the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon. Moving on to college, I just couldn’t figure out when to stop and ended up with a Ph.D. in microbiology. Naturally, I then immediately found work in the geosciences. Over the years I did contract research for the US Department of Energy, NASA, and many private companies. I operated a consulting business and taught microbiology and ecology as associate professor at several nearby colleges and universities. In 2022, I retired, sold everything, moved on board, and sailed away from it all.

Overland Equipment
Sometimes I leave s/v Wild behind and live on shore for a while. E.g. when it’s in dry storage for hurricane season.
Backpack Sometimes I travel on foot and sleep in a tent
Land Yacht is a 2016 GMC Yukon XL that I use as a mini camper or it can tow:
Base Camp, a 2018 Keystone travel trailer. Base Camp also carries a bicycle and an inflatable kayak.
